A little bit of progress on the 70

I watched this truck sit in a fellow's front yard for almost a year, finally decided to stop and ask him about it. It was his grandfather's truck, with 73,000 original miles on it. I really liked how much of it was still there, and not hacked up. My grandfather had a 1969 when I was growing up, and this one's almost exactly like the one he had. I decided to get this truck and fix it up, everytime I drive it it brings back memories of climbing up in the cab of that 69.
This is what it looked like last May when I bought it:



The motor was pretty tired, so I compression tested it and only found 2 1/2 good cylinders. It did 65 mph for 55 miles with no problems, on these 2 and a 1/2 cylinders. It amazed me.

I pulled the engine the next day, and found 3 busted compression rings.

When I found loctite on the main caps I started worrying.

The head was in surprisingly good shape, though.

I had the block bored and the crank turned, with all new freeze plugs and bearings.

I ended up assembling and stabbing the engine in the same day, but the local parts house not having a timing gear set as promised, I was set back a little. At 3 a.m. the following morning I was hooking all of the accessory's up.

The next day I drove back to the big city, for college.

A few weeks later I started on the suspension, new king pins, coil over shocks, and all new bushings.

Next came performance parts, which actually gave me a 4 mpg increase in fuel economy.

Took a weekend for all the stuff to get put in, but I welded my own exhaust system from the header to the axle on the ground with no jacks, I won't do that again .

I took it for a test drive, and found out that 85 mph was no longer all it had in it.

I've been driving it almost daily ever since, it gets all sorts of looks.

I recently started painting it.

You have to get creative when you're using a rolling shop compressor with a crappy air line, I felt like I was holding a mac10 when I was shooting the paint.


^ It's a slow work in progress, but it's getting there slowly.
Right now it's on hold because of college, I should pick back up progress around the first of the year. My plans are to lower it with DJM's kit with swaybars, possibly american racing rims. I'd like to go to four wheel disc brakes, I already have everything to swap the front minus a booster, and the same for power steering minus a pump and box. I recently aquired a 91 mustang roller shortblock and a aod-e transmission, so they'll probably go in it fairly soon for a little more power..

I'm still deciding what motor to end up keeping i've got a roller 302 shortblock, a 460 with cobra jet heads, and the 240.. I sort of want to convert it to a hurst competition plus floor shift with clifford dual carbs and just make it look good, but part of me wants the che** stompin big block.. Either way it's getting lowered with beams, everything I do to the truck will be bolt ons that can be unbolted, in case I ever want to go back stock.

, The truck looks great! 100 MPH? Only way to see that on my bump would be with some really tiny tires or a really off speedo-gear . As for choosing an engine I really like the I6's they are torquey little engines and having driven trucks with both the 302 and I6 (newer F-150 with a 6) I'd say they are close on power overall but when it comes to having bottom end torque the 6 is the winner. With that said you've got a few choices all of which would be a decent choice I say go with whatever you feel like putting in there .

I've had it over 115 I know for a fact, I had a Honda Civic all riced out do the flyby on the interstate and I caught up with him and nailed it and blew his doors off.. I think Hondas shut off around 115 anyways? It was funny at the redlight, he asked, "Man what's under your hood?! I replied "A 240 straight 6". I'll upload the vid from it if you'd like .
