best heater for shop?
I am looking for advise on how to heat my 28x32' shop/garage. It has ten foot walls sloping up to 13' 6" in the middle and will be insulated. I will need to heat the shop relatively quickly for my evening work times. I pay really high electric costs as I live in California and my rates at 34 cents a kw. I expect to use propane considering the electric rates in the area. Our winter weather is usually 50-60 degrees in the daytime and around 28-30 degrees at night. It seems my choices are some sort of overhead radiant heat or a Hot Dawg type of solution. Any feed-back or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

re: best heater for shop?
Kurt,
There are a few of us HVAC guys here on the forum.
This is the exact opposite of engineering rule #1 in heating and cooling, heat rises
Any type of radiant heating should diffuse the heated air closer to the ground in the shop, (that's the coldest part of the room).
When the lowest part of the room is warm/ the upper half has already been satisfied for heat.
With that said, I'd go with the economical cost of the propane heat.
I won't even attempt to reccommend a specific model or brand, hopefully someone more region specific can help in this aspect.

I bought one of those little forced air propane heaters for my garage. Takes about ten minutes to get it comfortable and that's without insulation and a ten foot ceiling.

I use a Toyo Laser 73 stove for my shop. The sizes is 28'x48' with a 12' ceiling with 6- 4'x6' windows and a 16'x10' door. Its 92% efficient. I keep my shop @ 55 degrees all winter long. But it is much colder here in Oregon (east side of the cascades) then where you live.

House is one thing and a shop is another LOL. I couldn't pay the heat bill if I left it @ 73 Degrees. It would be too worm in the shop to work in. LOLgbrett wrote:ford 428 I use a toyo laser 73 in my house it works great I keep it a little wamer han 55 though
55 in my shop feels quite worm. The nice thing is that the concrete is worm and everything you touch does as well. I love my stove. 55 believe it or not is real comferable to work in. Its not to hot and it isn't as cold as one would think it would be. Really nice to have!!!

I have an older timberline wood stove with an oil mister on the back for a 24 x 28 x 8 garage. Gets cozy with a coupe fans going. Bondo needs around 80 degrees to set up completely.

How about a used oil furnace? A friend has one, it was expensive but the fuel is usually free. It burns clean and you only have to clean it twice a year.

Question, what about the dust from sanding? Doesn't that pose a problem with flame or kerosene heat? Just , thought it might be flamable , I could use some

Dust as a rule is if you can see your fingers with your arm strectched out you are ok. We get that with paper dust at work.
Vapors are scary though. I thought twice about primering the cab last night with the heater running. Vapors were enough to knock you over...
