70 shorty

Post by BlueBleedingGreaseMonkey »

I bought this truck my first year of college, rebuilt the six and drove it for a year before it gave up on me. I've grown up in bumpsides and dentsides, can't see myself ever owning another sort of truck I actually love.

Rebuilt the front end, found out the simplicity of our front ends, fell in love.

240 after a shortblock rebuild, entire new head, a performance cam, headers, intake, carburetor, and borla mufflers.

The little 240 gave up after 5000 miles, this is going in.

Going in, this is where I'm at now.

Well, today consisted of getting the headers bolted up, considering there are no collectors; the previous owner of my donor truck had the headers welded straight into the exhaust pipe. :x And seeing as it doesn't leak, I opted to not cut them and use my spare set of headers. The headers pretty much wrapped up the hard parts, the rest is little simple details. Here's how she sits now.

The main plan for now is to get it accelerating and decelerating, I miss driving it. The only money I've got in this engine is gaskets. I plan on painting it next spring. Anybody ever had luck building their own paint booth out of plastic??

Well I got it running today, or at least I crunk it up. I didn't have enough gas onhand to do much more then fill up the carb bowls, and the water pump, etc is yet to be hooked up. But it's progression anyways.

Some 2x4's, staplegun and plastic you can build a makeshift paintbooth!!! My dad used tarps, has been using it for over 10 years now to paint everything from cars to cabnets!!! He recently took it down...which was great for me. I have had a 78 cougar sitting in the barn, blocked in for the last 10 years...because of his paintbooth!

Well, my h.e.i. ebay distributor wasn't finnicky, so I made my own ignition system - msd blaster coil, duraspark distributor, and a h.e.i. module. The h.e.i. module is so simplistic to wire in, I'd use it for a replacement over the duraspark box any day of the week, but that's primarily due to the headaches the box I had gave me. Here's the motor running half decent progress vid. I'm going to a serpentine underdrive pulley setup soon, not sure how soon. Life's been putting my project on hold a bunch lately. More to come.

Smokey, that's what I did when I painted the front clip. It came out great minus the spot I left open in the plastic, I reckon bugs love light and white!? :x Next time I'll close EVERY hole lol. Do you cut and buff it after it dries?

I'm not the bodyman GreaseMonkey! My dad is a man of many talents tho. I know you need to buff and polish it somehow. We live on a farm so I know about the bugs, moskitoes and dust that can ruin a paint job. Enclose your paint area completely and wear a resperator!!!
