started my tank swap

so i mocked up the bronco 2 23 gallon tank, fits good. i have a filler door assy off a dent that i'm going to weld into the bedside. tank has about 16" of ground clearance ( 71 f100 2 wd lb ). the rear x member needs to be moved back about 6" or so. you can see the two holes where the rivets were originally.

Awesome! We also have a '66 coupe!! It's one of those someday projects that is currently in a thousand pieces in two locations. My Dad actually bought it over thirty years ago, which was before he even met my Mom.

Sadly I see so...many guys butcher the bed with a Mustang tank, (even after I've recommended the Bronco tank).
I'll personally never understand why anyone would want to make a big portion of the bed area non usable by putting a gas filler in it.

yeah, i hate seeing a filler in the bed floor. i guess if the truck is just a hot rod and not used as a truck anymore ( yeah, there are exceptions ) , the mustang tank is ok, but not my cup of tea.

i even have a factory fill tube cover from a 71 to use in the bed

Awesome! I was wondering why you swapped to the tank under the bed. Did you not like the one in the cab? I'm working on my truck and I'm trying to decide whether to do this or not. What are your reasons for doing it?

i'm not a fan of the in cab tank for one, i'm running efi on my truck so this allows me to run an in tank pump, plus i gain a little storage in the cab, and every little bit helps in a single cab.

Adam, just to add about why to change the tank...
Most of us have had fuel issues with the in cab tank, (especially if it's the original) from rust (due to condensation over 50+ years of use) so it makes perfect sense to ditch the tank and take those funds to drop one in between the frame rails.

Kudos to Emeraldcoupe for also going to EFI and be advised you can also get an early Bronco tank, (4-5 vendors for that) that will work with a carbed engine.

That tank looks good in there. It looks like you still have room for a drop hitch with that tank

Yes, plenty of room, in fact I drilled the holes for it already, and they are spaced perfectly clearing the x member.

to access the back two bolts you would have to drop the tank down a bit, no big deal.
