Dome light stays on

Post by Cmd314 »

Hey guys I'm working on a 69 f100 and I installed new door jam switches for the dome light and that went fine, the old ones were smashed. So after the install the light is staying on no matter if the doors are open or closed. I see the dome light only has one wire going into it, which is power, shouldn't there be a ground wire or is the dome light self grounding? I bring that up because the dome light schematic shows a ground wire off the dome light. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Dome Light is grounded to the Cab of the truck through the mounting screws.

There are three ways to light up the courtesy lamp: the right hand door, the left hand door and the headlight switch. Rotate that switch, and it just might turn your dome light off.

If that doesn't do it, check back and we'll look into it further.

I tried to turn the switch in every direction and no luck. The light stays on until i unplug it at the dome light.

Ok, you've got an odd problem.
The door jamb switches are "normally closed, momentarily open, single pole" switches.
When the doors are shut, they push the switch plungers, which are supposed to spread the switch contacts apart, breaking the circuit.
Something must be bypassing the normal operation of one or more switch.
I'd remove one switch, then the other, then both, to see if the dome light works without a switch (or without both switches).
If the dome light is working without the switches in place, you've got a short to hot somewhere.
If the problem goes away when a switch is removed, it's probably a defective switch.

It's one of the easiest / cheapest / most gratifying upgrades you can do to your bump is to ditch the cheap single pin dome light switches-for dent era switches and never look back at dome light issues that plague bump owners!
Get the harness portion from a boneyard with the switch (or buy them new repop).
