Welding new roof on cab
Is it advisable/possible to weld the window bottom line up of a roof to another cab? I have one truck with a good cab that an oak tree fell on and crushed the roof, and another truck that needs a new cab .There are chop tops done to cars and trucks,so I would think it would work. No?

It can be done .
You'll have to jack up and square up the damaged roof first , get it almost perfect .
Then measure carefully and cut the two roofs at the same place and weld the good roof on.
I would cut as high as possible on the pillars.
You might be able to cut along the back seam depending on how damaged your roof is.

You'll want to sleeve ("slug") the windshield posts and then rosette-weld the sleeves to posts. Just butt-welding the posts doesn't provide the a reasonable amount of strength.

Using a MIG welder?

Rosette weld? With a torch rosebud? Surely thats not what you mean.HIO Silver wrote:You'll want to sleeve ("slug") the windshield posts and then rosette-weld the sleeves to posts. Just butt-welding the posts doesn't provide the a reasonable amount of strength.
As far as replacing the roof. Is the damage minimal enough to just reskin it?

Heck no.. "rosette weld" as in "plug weld".fordman wrote:Rosette weld? With a torch rosebud? Only a miscreant would use a torch on this type of work...

my roof is in rough shape too. a tree fell on it and smashed the drip rail and the passenger side of the roof. will be dealing with this problem eventually. have been told the only way i will be satisfied with the appearance is if i weld a new top on by cutting the roof off another bump and swapping it.

Re: Welding new roof on cab
Could I cut the front windshield posts at the base of the cab and then weld the new roof with windshield posts to the cab?

Re: Welding new roof on cab
I wouldnt cut at base of cab. Unless one of the pillars is bad. Like was already posted. You need a strong place to weld the new post back onto.

It can be done.
I would think it would be easier and cheaper to just get another truck.
If you are going to weld on a new roof, it might be cool to go with a custom look and chop it or something.

Re: Welding new roof on cab
Separate the body from the cab at the factory joints. Sawzall the roof off above the factory joint, drill the spot welds out and as said above, plug weld the new roof where you drilled the spot welds out. Ford was still using lead on these trucks so you may get to melt some of that out. If the damage is below the factory joints, tweak them to match the cab. If not, remove the glass ans weld tie bars to the pinchweld to help hold the posts true while you weld it back together.
