Two questions: Drip rail sealer and Body filler.

Post by luke-ao »

What type of sealer do I use for the drip rail? I have a seam sealer from Eastwood for the cab but it seams like it would to messy of an application for the drip rail, any suggestions?

Also, on all the car shows I see guys using this light green body filler that looks much softer and easier to work than the standard pink bondo. You see them cover entire hoods, fenders, etc, then work it down quickly even without pneumatic air boards, any idea what this stuff is?

Maybe this will help you. http://www.evercoat.com/index.aspx . I have not used any standard red bond anywhere on my truck. I like using the bondo glass for shallow imperfections. After sanding on the glass i will go over that with polyester putties

All bondo I've ever seen is light gray. It's the hardener that creates the color.

Your missing the point, I don't care about the color I'm looking for a specific product. I stated the color in hopes of identifying what they are using. Every car show I see on TV, the guys are using this product, I’m interested because it looks to be much easier to work than the old school pink Bondo (yes that’s mixed) I’ve used for the past 30 years.

3M Drip-Chek Sealer #08531:

"A light gray colored sealer, specially designed to seal exterior auto body definition seams, typically found on older model vehicles. Heavy Drip Chek Sealer is designed for applications to drip rails, coach joints and narrow automotive seams (all definition seams). This product will shrink during the curing process to provide a visual definition seam. Excellent adhesion to metal, paint, glass, rubber, etc. Resists gas and oil. Heavy-based sealer especially designed for vertical seams. Heavier bodied consistwncy. Up to 1/8 inch can be applied easily. This product weathers well and does not deteriorate under sunlight."

The final skim coat of filler is Evercoat Rage Gold... a lightweight filler. Sands/blocks real easy.

The green body filler is likely Duraglas.

Duraglas is not easier to sand
On TV everything looks easier.

They might be using a yellow chromate type filler and blue hardner , that'll make green.
Also some polyester putties sand easier but don't build as well regular filler.

For the drip rail there is NOTHING better then Valvoline pliogrip self leveling seam sealer. Not cheap and you need a application gun. It flows out nicely, is workable for about 15 min, and is sand able unlike the rest of the seam sealers that absolutely suck to work with. All others set up so fast there is no tool time and they are not sand-able. I filled my drip rail with it and it flowed out perfectly. I didn't even have to touch it.

Have you used the SEM 2K sealers?
Just curious as the say they are sandible and have about the same cure time as the Valvoline.

I have not but it is probably the same or close. 3m makes it as well. What I have found and what I really meant was if it is seam sealer and it it comes in a single tube you use in a standard caulk gun; it probably sucks. If it is the double barrel epoxy type; your good to go.
