Rattle can reccomendation

Post by duaneo »

Folks,

My lovely truck
Image

Has some serious peeling/chipping/paint bubbles on the hood. I've attempted to "match" with hardware store rattle cans, but not very successfully. I am not ready to take it to a body shop, and I'd like to cover the unsightly peeling with something that looks decent from 10 feet.

Does anyone have experience with either color code or chip mail in matched rattle can paint? Can you make a recommendation?

Cheers,
Duane

If you know the color code, try NAPA. They mixed up some Boxwood green in a spray can for me once. The color was spot on!

I've also heard about NAPA color matching. If you do that I'd appreciate a report back on how it went.

On a related subject, Rustoleum Matte Nickel is decent match for the 70s Metallic Silver. But not as "metallic" as some might like.

What you have there is likely a two-stage paint with the clear coat peeling off. Top coating over paint that isn't adhering is a temporary fix.

Agreed. I think when they put this 67 hood with 71 side emblems on my 71 truck, they did a quick and dirty re-shoot, and possibly didn't properly prepare the surface. I plan on sanding/griding through the peeling paint, primiering, coating, and clear-coating, at least until the body shop can do it properly with the rest of the truck. :)

Not sure if it can still be done, but about two years ago I had paint matched to a car by a local automotive paint supplier. They then put the paint into rattle cans for me. I have used this method to touch-up several cars that had clear coat peeling. I just sand it down with fine sandpaper, prime it and then blend in the rattle can paint to the original. Looks much better than pealing paint. This is not a cheap process by rattle can standards, if I remember correctly it cost me $75 for three cans of paint. But, if you compare to body shop prices it is fantastic.

if you can get someone to match and mix the paint you can use a ratlecan system sold right on the isle in Lowe's.
http://www.preval.com I believe is the company/product.
Yup did a quick search and found this but it can be fancier:
