undercarriage and engine compartment paint

Post by 1969 FORD F250 »

Restoring a 1969 Ford F250. Need to paint inside engine compartment on fenders. Also need to paint under truck since everything is rust colored but not badly rusted. Before body paint I want to do this right. What paint colors and brand?

KBS coatings. awesome stuff. you want the chassis kit. basically the rust preventative and top coat. Brushing it on actually works VERY well.

Thanks for the info. I will pressure wash it well and dry for a week or so before I paint it. Glad it is brush on. It will keep me from having to worry about overspray getting on other parts.

Is there much difference between the KBS and Por-15? Por 15 is basically a solvent that works on rusted spots. Already painted areas must be treated with their primer first for it to stick. Then you apply whatever top coat (particularly if exposed to UV).
I think frames were painted a semi-gloss black originally. Not sure what under the hood was. I have been using Por on the frame and front/rear end components.

Has anyone used EASTWOOD rust converter and Eastwood Encapsulator? Big truck with 8 food bed so I doubt a quart will complete the jpb. I can get a gallon of rust converter for 99.99 and encapsulator for 139.99.

I will say I was surprised at how far a quart of Por-15 would go. The stuff goes on more like a solvent than a paint in my opinion. However, on another forum I have heard good things about Eastwood's product. Ospho is another alternative for taking on rust. An acid that converts rust to a paintable surface.

I've used the Eastwood encapsulator on various repairs I've made on mine. I've sprayed it directly on rust in some test areas. A year later those areas are looking good. I have a gallon and am prepping my cab right now to shoot it inside and out with the stuff, followed by seam sealing then an epoxy primer. I have used the spray cans of it as well as the flexible whip Eastwood sells. I like the whip a lot. Getting inside the rockers, cowl and roof seams is awesome.

Basically
