1970 F100 interior restoration RECORD

After my 2005 Subaru Outback XT turbo went out for the second time I decided it was time to move on. I did not want to deal with anymore plastic, computers, or turbos.

So I began searching for any truck older that 1980. It did not take long for me to realize how much I liked the look of a Ford compared to any other American made truck.
And then I saw it, a 1970 F100 custom shortbed c6 240 2WD. It was the perfect work / daily driver / project truck.



The first couple weeks crawling around the truck and drawing up my project plans have been very fun. My truck is pretty clean, the only real work it needs is on the interior.

Since I have lots of small projects in mind. I figured I would start a project post to update my progress, I plan to....

Clean and paint the stearing column & steering wheel

Clean up the surface rust

touch up paint the interior

resurface the armrest

clean and paint the door panels

find an original AM radio to install

re-upholster the bench seat

add shoulder belts and the middle seat lap belt accessory

The Previous owner replaced the dash and the instrument bezzle.

The final stage would be to address the flooring,
I was thinking carpet but the original lightning bolt floor mat is growing on me.

I still need this truck to be a daily driver so my projects consist of taking everything apart, and then getting it back together by monday.

I figured out the original colors of the truck were wimbleton white with a blue trim package.

My goal is to keep everything on the truck as original as possible.

I noticed that everything that is blue in the truck needed to be replaced or resurfaced.
The arm rests, door panels and seat belts are blue
The original blue seat is mostly gone and has been replaced with a seat cover.

Since I have to replace everything that is blue and the previous owner just bought the nice black dash I have decided to let myself of the hook from a complete and accurate original interior

Thanks for all of the tips and suggestions already. I removed most of the surface rust, old stickers and dirt from inside the cab.


My first big interior project is cleaning and painting the Door Panels and Arm rests



Here is my supply list......

Rustoleum primer - White
Dupli-Color Perfect match for Fords -Wimbleton White
Rustoleum Clear Coat - Matte
Rustoleum vinyl paint - flat black
x24 #8 3/8" Metal screws



Basically I took the door panel and arm rest apart using the fordification technical artical How to Completely Disassemble a Door

With several coats from each stage, primer, main color coat and clear coat I was able to get pretty clean results.



I also cleaned the parts for the door and replaced the screws



You can see how the interior has already come to life with a few nights of cleaning and a weekend worth of painting
It brightened my cab up a whole lot, well worth the outcome for the price.

My second big project on my truck was to get a original AM radio installed. My truck had the radio delete plate and no original wiring.

Being that it was my first auto wiring project there has definately been a learning curve at the beginning.

I started two radio threads, one for instalation questions and one for wiring issues...

To start, I clipped off the old half of the in-line fuse on the power wire and spliced in a new 5 amp in-line fuse using two butt connectors, heat wrapping each new connection.



I spent quit some time under the dash learning how the radio should get its power, using FORDifications wiring diagrams and the wiring color chart....

I learned that the accessory wire is a 12-gauge Black-Green wire. When I found the Accessory wire coming out of the ignition switch I noticed and fixed a few wires that have cracked over time.
( like the cracked yellow wire in the picture that supplies power from the battery to the ignition switch )



The new power wire then punches into the accessory spade connection at the fuse box.
To ground the unit I ran a wire from the bolt that hooks to the radios' mounting bracket to a bolt on the metal frame behind my glovebox.
