rust bucket coming together

Post by fonfixer »

I started on my rust bucket last weekend. I parked it two? maybe three years ago because no money for parts. Plan is to put it back on the road and let my 17 year old son drive my '03. Had to pull the engine to replace a freeze plug. While the engine was out we replaced both of the shaft seals in the three speed gear box. Got engine/transmission dropped back in place just before dark. Started today where we left off last night, fuel line, radiator and that kinda stuff. After all that it still won't start. Will a condenser go bad just sitting? I don't think its the coil, got 12 volts in 540 out. Another coil has 240 volts out on the secondary, but still no spark. Wife wants to have date night, so its quitting time, with a side trip to parts store for points and a condenser.

are the ignition wires re connected in the same as you took em off? possibly a loose ground wire somewhere? might have to go and re trace your wiring work, usually its always something you find and say,"man was i dumb"! lol, there are alot of wiring diagrams on this site! good luck!

New condenser and points fixed that problem. Running on two year old gas mixed with a little new gas so it runs kinda rough. Started to run transmission through its gears, thats when i found the master cylinder had gone out just setting there. Master cylinder was newish when I parked the truck, very low miles on it. Guess it didn't agree with the weather or something and the rubber just gave up. Any such thing as a rebuild kit for a master cylinder.

rust bucket update

Post by fonfixer »

Finally got the brakes done, well at least the wheels. Still have to bend new hard brake lines between master cylinder and proportioning valve and bleed the brakes, no biggie. Went to replace the lower and upper bearing in the steering column, thats when I found the shaft and the clamp around the shaft that hold the lower bearing in place were worn beyond use. Got steering column rebuilt and put back in this evening. Clutch linkage went back but lost one of the rubber bushings for the shift linkage, only had first and reverse. Still no brakes, but I got brave and drove to the end of the driveway!! YAY!! It's been long slow process, but its finally coming together. Had to knock off early cause we have a storm coming through. Wife won't let me use the garage and she ain't built me a shop yet so all this is getting done in the driveway.

Riding again!!

Post by fonfixer »

:D Ok, finally got the right master cylinder, had to reflare the hard lines yet again because of the wrong fittings. As much as I've double flared lines, I've finally got down to getting it right the first time. Had lots of practice!! A new headlight switch corrected the issues with the low beams/hi beams not working. And the turn signals gave me fits, but they're good to go now. I got all the tools out from under the hood, dropped it into first. A little jerky at first until i got the feel of it again. Made three rights and left to get back home, wife said not to go on the highway, but I counldnt resist. A couple more small things and it'll be street legal. :D :D :D
