1968 Short Wide Ford!!!

Post by tbrown1986 »

Hello, I'm new to FORDification! I just recently purchased a 1968 F-100 Short Wide Bed. It's got a 390 FE and 3 on the tree. The previous owner was going to restore the truck but decided that he would rather sink his money into a VW Bug.....to each his own.... Anyways, It runs, drives, brakes, and the lights work. It passed the Missouri Inspection and will soon be tagged to drive. It had no exhuast on it so I negotiated with the seller and got dual flomasters put on. The previous owner replaced the two front outter fenders, installed a new radiator, and core support, took the engine out and freshened it up and painted the motor. He also painted the engine bay gloss black from the firewall to the radiator. The inside of the truck is all original. Its like stepping back into 1968. He included all the original trim, and the original owners manual from when it was sold brand new. It was sold in my home town back in 68'.

I think i got a good deal consider its a running 68' short wide, with some restoration already done. It has rust in the floorboards. They will need to be replaced eventually. I have a 06' FX4 that I keep in the garage and my daily drive is 96 Ranger. I plan on driving this old girl everyday because, as everyone knows, the new trucks aren't anylike like an old one.

I guess my first offical question is what is she worth just like she is. Check out the pictures. It's actually in pretty decent shape. I gave $1800 for her.. I hope i didn't get ripped off! I"m looking forward to starting the restoration on this old girl. Let me know if you think I got a good deal??

8), I think you've gotten a great deal! I wish I could find a truck in that good of shape around here for $1800 . Looks like a solid foundation for a restoration for sure, what are your future plans for it?

A Supercharged 5.4 and an AOD and a full body off resto with a new front end, disk brakes would be awesome. But as money permits I plan on making it a RestoMOD.

8), sounds like you've been doing some thinking! I'm guessing that since you say you are going with a 5.4 and an AOD tranny with a new front-end you are doing a crown-vic front end swap, if so then I'd like to see how you do things in comparison to how other people have done the swap if not then you may want to consider doing the swap. Sorry about taking over your build thread here .

I said that set up would be ideal, i wish i could afford to do something like that. I will probly stick with the same front end, maybe grab the power brakes off my 86??? I like the 390 so she will probably stay put. I would like to get a 5 speed to put behind the 390 but i havent done the research to see what fits and what doesn't. I get tired of shifting on the tree. Don't worry about taking the thread over, your the only one who's posted their thoughts.

i say keep the 390...nothing like that classic sound...shortbeds are the best for restomods in my opinion and just not enough of em' in the custom scene yet...however i too have thoughts of the lightning or cobra supercharged v8 with a 6 speed..but without money there just that..only thoughts and DREAMS..
As for your truck, i think $1800 is fair depending on where you live. but that motor looks to have had recent work done and thats big when your talkin about makin it your DD. i too use mine every day cause its just plain 8)
all in all..nice truck and enjoy it

I picked up a set of old headers for the 390 today at the car show in Springfield MO. I paid $35 bucks for them. I didn't think that was too bad. I'm ready to get them installed.

If the spots are just smallish-sized holes, you can buy mild sheet steel, cut out the rust and mig weld in some fresh metal.
