Getting started on the choptop truck...

Post by FORDification »

Well, since I haven't had a shop day in quite some time where I was actually able to work on trucks, and since I had the day off today, I decided to break the new year in right and get started on the choptop truck.

Here's what I've (tentatively) decided to do: this is going to be my 'rat-rod' truck...one that ain't purty by any means, it'll be loud and scary-lookin'. :D I can't work on the '67 since I'm basically at the point where I need to start painting, but it's too cold to paint now, so I've decided that thrashing on the choptop will be my winter project. I was going to rebuild the 460 and drop it in this truck, but have decided instead to drop the complete 390 I have, that was originally destined for the '67. Since it's still together, I'm just going to steam-clean the hell out of it and drop it in. The goal is to have it roadworthy by springtime.

The previous owner had replaced the floorpans, front cab mounts and rear cab corners and then sealed up all the joints with a tar sealer. While it might have been OK, especially considering the goal of this project, I decided that I did want to clean up and seal the interior and exterior floorpans with POR-15, which meant stripping it all down to bare metal....so getting the outside floorpans cleaned up was what was on today's agenda.

Here's a shot of the box removed and setting up on end, the front sheetmetal removed and the cab flipped onto it's back for cleaning.

Image

After I got the bottom side about half cleaned up, I was taking a smoke break and walking around the truck when I noticed some bubbling under the primer on the driver's door. At this point I'm thinking "...oh hell, here we go again...", and I was right. After spending some time stripping the primer off the door, I discovered that the whole bottom half of the door skin was rusted and very beat up, and then just covered up with body filler almost 1/2" thick in places.

Since this door has been chopped, I can't just throw under rust-free door on (which is too bad, since I've got several)...I'm going to have to weld in a whole lower door skin. I decided to temporarily postpone the floorpans, and went ahead and dug out the cut-off tool and then cut off the skin.

I'm putting together a project update page with a whole bunch of pictures, it'll be posted tonight before I go to bed.

OK, I have the new choptop project update page posted. There are 17 pictures posted on this page, showing the rust and dent damage I found today on the driver's door.

Man! What a way to start off the new year! :( Oh well, I learned quite a bit on welding sheetmetal with the MIG when I was welding up my box seams, so I guess I'll find out if it stuck, when I have to weld in a lower door skin.

That's going to be a fun project. I had thought of doing my 65 in a rat-rod style, but not sure yet. My car guy curiosity makes me ask, Keith. What's under the car cover in the background of the pictures??

Looking good! That door skin should be a piece of cake to weld in.

boy that's the truth keith you sure have some projects going on....but thats cool because think if you was to go out and buy something brand new? you still couldn't work on it and heck the projects you have now could be your nest egg for retirement ya know? thats what i'm looking at buying at least 3 to 4 vehicles and fixing them up for the kids and trying to figure out a nest egg because social security won't be around when i get older and i want to enjoy life later down the road...keep up the good work keith I sure have missed your updates on you pages....Terry(bo)

Great! Been waiting to hear "the rest of the story" on the chop project.
That is a nice looking chop job on that truck. Nice proportion. Are you going to salvage a door skin off of one of your parts doors or buy a new one. And maybe I missed it, but whats the verdict on the welded up seams on the 67 bed? THRASH! Have fun.... :D

That's my '67 442...it was the car project I was working on when I got the Ford, and then got totally sidetracked with the pickup. The Olds is 100% dent-free and rust-free! :D I'm also in the middle of a frame-off on that one, and have all the neat parts to assemble it into a rolling chassis. One of these days...

Yeah, I can't believe I haven't done a truck project update page since JUNE! I was doing them at a rate of 2-3/month up till then, but then life started getting busier and I just haven't had the time to go to the shop and get anything done. Well, there HAVE been a couple opportunities, but I had other things I wanted to do, often with the website. Hopefully I'll be able to have some fairly regular updates with the choptop project though.

Well, that's one of the few things left to finish on my '67. Although my seam-welding caused a little panel warping due to my inexperience, I was able to spend some time with them and got it about 98% flat...the rest I'll take care of with filler. I haven't started on the other side yet, but at least I'll be able to take the experience I gained with first side and keep the warpage to a minimum. And considering the liberal application of filler that the previous owner to the choptop used, I'm betting the filled seams on it's bed were done with filler too, instead of being welded up. I haven't checked yet, but I will...and if they are filled in that way, I'll be cleaning it all out and welding them up.

If only our pesky jobs didn't get in the way with our car and truck projects! That is one of my favorite years for the 442.

The chop is exactly 7 inches, and leaves me with 5-3/4" rear window and an 11-5/8" front windshield, with 9-1/2" side windows. That windshield measurement is from the lower to upper channel, not a straight up/down measurement.

Wow! That is really cool. Tough luck with that flippin rust huh? Well, the knowledge you are gaining is amazing. It is looking good. I can only dream of the day i too can do that stuff...which will hopefully be in July/ August time frame.
