Re: 1970 F100 - Kids first truck
Hey all, blew the heater core while setting timing and carb, so I figured I would post the operation to fix it.
First, remove the heater hoses. It is not necessary to drain the coolant as you will lose a minimum amount if it hasn’t already leaked out the core anyway. Close the heater valve, this cuts off the coolant on that side, and remove the other hose first. It may seem like a lot of coolant is coming out but that is just because the core is mounted upside down. I used a couple of pieces of wire I had handy to support the ends of the hoses so they are higher than the rest of the system. My hoses are new and came off easily, if yours are old or stubborn just cut off the clamps, slit the hoses lengthwise with a knife, twist them off and replace them. Now it is time to move inside.
Remove the ducts for the defroster vents, a pocket screwdriver can help here but the plastic is easily broken and the ducts can be brittle, be prepared to replace both of them. Remove the five 3/8 screws securing the vent to the kick panel.

Remove the screws securing the glove box liner and the cable for the door. Be very careful removing the liner and be prepared to replace this as well, they were flimsy from the get go and age just makes it worse. It is not necessary to remove the door.
Disconnect the orange wire.

Behind the defroster vents are the clamps for the control cables secured with 5/16 screws. Mark them at the clamp before removal. One of the cable ends is hidden behind the unit but both are fairly easy to get off.
Now it is time to go back out to the engine bay and remove the three 7/16 nuts that secure the blower box to the firewall.
Now that the box is free, disconnect the connector for the blower motor resistor which is conveniently located on the back side of the housing.

Re: 1970 F100 - Kids first truck
Everything is now disconnected so it’s time to fight this thing out from under the dash. Pull the box back till the studs and core pipes clear the firewall, tilt it downward on the left hand side, move it toward the shifter/trans hump and remove the vent housing from the kick panel. This is fun but not as much fun as trying to get the rubber boot back on it later.

Here is the blower box with fresh air vent as removed.
Remove the eight 5/16 screws from the metal cover and remove the cover.
Remove the metal clip that holds the core against the rubber boot and the foam rubber block that wedges the core into the box.You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Assembly is the reverse; don’t forget the clip or foam rubber block otherwise the core will rattle around in the blower box.
There is plenty of the core insulation material left over to seal the core pipe holes. You cant tell but I just cut small X's in the material to allow the pipes to pass through. Here is the retention clip installed, the foam rubber block went back in just before the cover went on. The unit all together, cleaned and painted. At this point I also sprayed some white lithium grease on the door pivots and linkage arms.

Re: 1970 F100 - Kids first truck
Been getting some work done on the truck, just haven't had time to post. This is all the stuff for the disk brake conversion that I will be doing soon.
Still need one bearing cup and a few hours to take out the old and put in the new.You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Rear shocks. Painted them blue but the ford logos I ordered are meant to be put on the inside of glass so I will have to get some new ones.
Installation was pretty quick and easy but I forgot to take pics. You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Re: 1970 F100 - Kids first truck
Scored a new grill at the NSRA Rocky Mountain Street Rod Nationals. $65, not in great shape but all there, and definitely better than what is on the truck now. Different year but so is the bed.
All grill bolts are 1/2 inch just in case you need to know what to take to the junk yard.
It is not necessary to remove the upper grill support but I wanted to add some paint to the core support in order to make the area behind the new grill look better.
If you are just replacing the grill just remove the inserts (4 screws) to reach the bolts behind the upper portion of the grill. All grill bolts are 1/2 inch just in case you need to know what to take to the junk yard.

Re: 1970 F100 - Kids first truck
dang dude, moving right along! wish my dad would give me a truck like that... oh well i can do it for my son, although by the time he's 18 (and probably not getting the truck till he's 20+) he'll have to go over it again.
i was wondering about the tie rods you showed, and said that it was what you needed for power steering conversion? I seem to remember that the PS drop link is different, but are the tie rods all different?
i just ordered tie rods and don't remember spec'ing ps or manual.... hope they fit, and work with the PS conversion when i get around to that.

It's great that you can do this for your daughter. Is she getting to help? It's looking good and will be a safe reliable ride when its done.
