Lifter noises

Post by mdbaker42 »

Hello to all. I'm needing the opinions of folks who've been there and done that. 1970 f250, 360, manual 4-speed, divorced yada, yada. I bought the truck w/80,000 original miles and besides looking a little worse for ware, it runs great. Since I bought it in 2010, I've brought it up to @ 100,000 miles using it occasionally to haul DIY supplies. 5 years ago while installing carb; intake and headers, exhaust bolts sheared so I had the machine shop remove the bolts and just for good measure recondition the heads. from then till now, that truck has run strong and true. Recently i've developed a lifter tapping ( cylinder #5 exaust) to be exact. So, how to fix? my thoughts are to install new cam, lifters, push rods and rockers. I'm not looking to raise performance. After all, its a 360 w/grany 4-speed and i like it for what it is. So, what do you think? To many miles on the engine? Runs strong, so it won't hurt anything? All input and opinions are welcome. Thanks, Mike.

Well it depends on what you want to spend
On a F E with a stock intake I've seen someone change a lifter with a magnet and patience , without removing the intake.
I would think you could do it with an aftermarket one.
I've changed the timing chain and gears and was impressed with the improvement in power. I would think that a modern mild cam would really wake it up.
May as well put an electronic ignition on too , if you haven't. :2cents:

First off verify that it isn't a worn rocker, FE rockers and shafts wear together, so probably all should be replaced if one is bad. Also, check the oil pressure, a common weakness.
