door hinge spring

Post by Bob 68 »

Has anyone replaced the spring in the door hinge, I need to put both sides in the 67 I just got. It looks about impossible to get in the hole to hook the far end of the spring. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Trial and error was my secret. I did it a couple years ago and used vise grip needlenose pliers to reach it back through the hole and hook it. Not easy any way you go at it.

I used a short length of chain( the kind that you hang those shop lights with) hooked one end of spring to it, used long nosed pliers to hook other end of spring to where it goes inside body, stuck a screwdriver through other end of chain (like a T-handle) and pulled spring to hook on hinge. worked slicker than poop on a hot day. got the spring at an Ace hardware store too.

A telescopic pickup magnet will come in handy too. When I replaced my springs I had to fish for the spring more than once when it fell inside the hinge cavity. It is nice now having the door stay open by itself.

Just put springs on my door hinges. Here's what I used with a screwdriver for leverage to stretch the spring.
