1971 Grille Removal

Post by PhotoBugz »

Does anyone have specific/detailed step-by-step instructions for removing a grille? I've never done it and I don't know where all the bolts are, and would rather not stand in the rain all day figuring it out :)

The schematic on this site doesn't help much and I tried searching the forums but I wasn't able to find anything... and the search feature keeps giving me 'try again in a few minutes'. Anyway, a link or any other help is appreciated very much

Cheers

Most of them are up inside each wheel well.. the shell is also bolted to the filler panel which is easier to remove as a single unit. Have fun.

The red dots represent where the bolts are (from the backside). I used combos of 1/2" standard or deep socket + 8" extension, depending on the bolt location. The far outside ones (3 each side) are accessible by reaching under the wheel well. Taking the inserts out makes the others easier to reach.

Taking the inserts out on a 70 or 72 is a piece of cake. Everything would work as photobugs suggest.
However the "71" is a different animal. The stainless strips in the center need to come off to access the screws behind them to remove the insert.
Unless you've removed the 71 inserts before I wouldn't recommend it. The little tabs holding the stainless trim will break if your not careful.
I have removed dozens of these and still break a tab every now and then.
For the "71" I suggest pulling the upper header off with the grille, then separate the two when you have it off the truck.
In fact 67-72 trucks I always remove the header with the grille, it's just so much easier. 10 extra bolts but well worth it.
