Engine paint?

Post by jake_hop34 »

Hey guys I'm working on painting my engine. I've already got the air filter compartment and a couple other easy things to get off primed and ready. I want to paint the test but I would love not to have to take the whole engine apart and I don't have a engine stand do its already hard. Any suggestions on what paint to use and if I could just tar off sections and that would look good or if I just need to take it apart? Thanks!

Please read: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/93854 ... ngine.html

The basic options are:
Krylon #1923
Duplicolor #1606
Plastikote # 224
Rustoleum 248946 Old Ford Blue
Rustoleum 248959 Ford Dark Blue
Rustoleum 248945 Ford Blue

Painting it is tough with the engine installed... depends how much work ya wanna put in. Powerwash the hell out of it.

This is Old Ford Blue...

It can be painted while mostly assembled. I painted one while it hung from an engine hoist. The key is clean, clean, and masking.
If it's not broke, MOD IT!

You know if you paint it without stripping it down, your going to have paint where you don't want it and bald spots where you want paint.

The answer is "of course you and paint assembled", but can you live with the results?
Due to the high cost of ammunition, you can no longer expect a warning shot.

When someone was beating on my door hollering "Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms", I naturally assumed it was a delivery.

You can clean an engine block/ engine/ AND engine compartment with engine installed. Time consuming, need lots of rags, brushes, solvent and some good final laquer thinner or acetone.
Don't really need primer on the engine block, I prefer Duplicolor Engine Enamel.

When restoring my truck YEARS ago, I took the Ford Corporate Blue paint cap to NAPA and had them mix up acrylic enamel paint, which allowed me to add hardner to the mix. I then sprayed through my paint gun and the engine still looks the same after almost 20 years. More work but it has lasted like no other.
