1971 Explorer Ginger

Post by duaneo »

Folks,

My truck is (I believe) painted in Explorer Ginger. Does anyone else here have this color? I haven't seen any, so I'm starting to think it's rather uncommon.

In contemplating upcoming bodywork and paint, I'm seriously considering keeping the original color. Since it seems to be rather uncommon, and is absolutely a late 60's early 70's color.

What are your thoughts?

Here is a picture:

It appears to be the same color as my 68 CS. No code on the 68's door tag due to it was special order. It was a Mustang color in 68 called Anniversary Gold. (As per HWY Patrol niece of original owner. I bought the truck after he passed.)

Huh, crazy that we end up having trucks that are the same (or nearly the same) color. :)

I have a 71 Explorer I bought for a parts truck that is the same color. If you want I can look to see if the color code is still on it. I know it was a one owner and that was the original color.

My truck also shows an X color code. I looked at a 71 chip chart and it didn't have X listed

" X " might be a custom color... back in the days when you could order up just about anything you wanted.

I had a '78 lincoln continental MK 5 that was factory painted a custom color, with custom landau and interior, all from ford. Don't remember ever checking to see if the color code confirmed that, but i bought it from the original owner and had all the paperwork for ordering the custom options.

Based on this page: http://www.fordification.com/tech/VIN71.htm

the body code of 8 4 tells me that:
8: Explorer Ginger
4: Styleside

I believe I have the X color code because it's an explorer and isn't painted a standard color.

I was looking up a color code for a 69 It wasn't there for a 69 model year so I looked in 70 model year code and there it was. The truck was also a very late year build.

I do not see that on that code page. What is the body code of 8 4:? Oh I see the body style code, but how did that lead u to a exterior color?
I am not doubting u, just looking to share info.
The only way I knew my trucks color is that the original owner wrote it on the operator's manual and the word of his niece who was with him when he bought it new.

Huh, I was busy explaining where I saw Explorer Ginger, and read the rest of the table, and now I believe Explorer Ginger refers to the interior trim, aka, the door panels and seat color. Maybe the body color IS anniversary gold. Interesting...

In the tech section Keith has a write up called "The 'Explorer Special' Explained". Here is a link to that write up, scroll down to the 71 & 72 section and he states the 71 & 72 model Explorer was made in three colors,Medium Blue, Lime Gold or Saddle Tan metallic paint.
http://www.fordification.com/tech/explorer.htm
Here is a chip chart Keith put in the literature section, the Saddle Tan looks like the color on our trucks.

Hope this helps.

My 1971 CS Explorer is blue metallic, with a "B" color code which isn't even listed as a color in my 1971 factory shop manual. It would be nice to just get a # color code. Unfortunately for me, the door jamb sticker is blank except for the VIN. In case anyone is wondering, I took off the explorer front bumper guards, and those rear wheels are from a mid seventies F350 Super Camper Special.
