69 F100 budget DD

Hey, new here but thought I'd throw up my truck. It's a 1969 f100 long bed, 2wd, 360, 3 spd. Truck was originally my granddads, but since its been sitting for the last 10 years, they allowed us to take it home!





There really isn't a huge amount of rust on it. I know atleast the front cab mounts need to be replaced and the floorpans im sure need to be too. The truck was originally put away because of a bad fuel pump. Someone tried to fix it and it escalated to a fire under the hood. Lucky us.



This was taken right after i pulled the carb. Anyways so far i've rebuilt the carb, fixed some of the wiring issues caused by the fire, spark plugs(4/8 broke! I hate champion plugs!), wires.

Drove it a couple days and now i'm replacing the clutch, all new brake parts, some gaskets in the motor and then i should be good to go for a DD. Not too shabby for a 17 year old!

Best way to fix these up is to drive them daily. That way you focus on whatever needs attention the most. If the motor is not running right that is what you work on. Steering and suspensions comes next. Then you can make it prettier...

Filled the truck up today before it went back into the shop. Got 3 Miles a gallon, so somethings going on there.

Yes u should at the least get 9 or 10.

On the front of the carb theres a rubber stopper that covers a hole. When you press the throttle, theres a bar that opens up the hole. I don't think that the hole is being opened. Could that be the cause of the terrible mileage and stumble?

Yes, 9 or 10 sounds right. You must be running extremely rich. Check idle mixture by adjusting screws. Check that the choke opens up all the way. The jets on my 390 2 barrel carb were 54F so they should the same or lower...

I found out today that i have a bad vacuum advance. Would that cause a mileage drop? I was going to try and tune the carb tomorrow and get a new advance in there.

A vacum gauge will help a lot with tuning in your carb. Pretty cheap at your local parts stores.

Yes that would hurt MPG. A working vac advance should show you a mpg increase. When mine was not working I put a new distributor in. Didn't want to mess with it. That and some mods I did brought my mpg up to 10 on my 390. Depending on how I drive it....VAAAROOOM Also as mentioned already,a well tuned carb is a big factor.

Well i fixed the vacuum advance fixed and drove it around for a while. Ended up getting back up to 8 miles to the gallon which seems better. I am however still having troubles with what i believe to be the accelerator pump. It will bog down and almost die off idle if i don't slip the clutch. How do i adjust the AP so it doesn't do this? Not very knowledgeable on carbs so im pretty lost about this one.

Autolite 2100, right? Increase the pump shot by repositioning the pump arm. However, as a new-to-you vehicle, rebuild the carb to establish a baseline and retune.

Call me nuts, but I'd powerwash the heck out of that engine. Dirty is OK, filthy drives me banananas.... seewhattamean?
