I had an old ididit tilt column taking up space in the garage so I'm going to shorten it and use it in my '70...the new Lecarra Mark 40 wheel should be here next week!

I ended up shortening the ididit 3.5". It's still about 2" longer than the stock housing but the Lecarra wheel is very shallow (1.25") in comparison to the stock 3 spoke wheel at ~5-3/4" deep. Time to rebuild the steering gear now so I can get my truck steering again!

I did a couple of light projects today...I dyed the dash pad and installed it along with disassembling, scrubbing, and reassembling the cowl vents with new foam gaskets.

I made the panel and used a '69 steel bezel. The '69 is very clean with the exception of the bed that has a few rust issues but it's still reasonably straight. The paint, for now, is Krylon satin black...that's right, rattle can! The original '69 was toast so I hacked it to pieces and swapped a truly rust-free '72 cab onto it.

No clear coat. It's holding up pretty well for rattle can and it's as durable as any spray paint (painted it in '09). I don't have any real complaints about it as I feel that I got what I paid for...I think I spent around $80. I wasn't in a position to pay for a higher dollar paint job at the time and I didn't have the time or money to get the body in shape before doing nicer paint anyway so this is what I did for a temporary solid color because it was 5 different colors when I was finished swapping the cab and other body panels for straighter/rust free ones. This has always been my low budget 'rat truck'. I'd like to make it nice one day and ideally, have a father/son project that my son can have for his first ride.

Hmm cool, yeah that is what is going on with my truck. All panels are miss matched in color. So I've painted them matte black to give it a 'resto in progress' look.
That black truck would be a great father sun project and his first classic vehicle.

Here's the truck my dad and I did a father son project with:

The old family farm truck.
I never drove it till I was 21 but we went to all the car shows in town with it.

I mocked up the steering column. I'm waiting to tack the dash mount bracket until I get the steering box degreased enough to set it in place temporarily and finalize the location. Once I get that then I'll weld the bracket on, prime, and paint the column, wheel, etc. and mount it for good. I'm also still waiting on the steering wheel trim (the silver/chrome bands) that's apparently back ordered...

Anyway, after this, I can rebuild the steering box and install it along with finalizing the carpet/firewall cover install and start the wiring...and gauge cluster!!!

Very nice, Patrick! She's going to look great. I really like that steering wheel and the tilt column is going to make her comfortable to drive. Gauges are going to look great in that dash too.

Wow! That look great, Patrick. That wheel definitely look right in there, and the gauges too, very cool. I've never been a fan of the modern tilt columns in the old trucks, but that one looks damn good - good work!
