When I embarked on this journey I think I under estimated the amount of time and work it takes to get a complete engine swap done and fine tuned. It has been daunting, partially since I had some problems that were hard to pin point and partially because I can't leave something alone until it's just the way I want it.
After making adapters for the ps lines, lengthening the clutch push rod, building a wire harness, making new rad hoses, building a throttle linkage, fabbing exhaust, reassembling the front end, and a few other things I'm sure I'm forgetting I was ready to fire her up. She fired off just fine, with one issue. With 3" pipe and the Thrush welded muffler, she was GODAWFUL loud.
After a short test drive she was running great until I pulled back in my driveway. It began to cough and miss, getting progressively worse until it wouldn't even idle.
SO, long story short after re-adjusting the valves, gapping the plugs, installing a new spark box, changing coils, swapping carbs, and hours of scratching my head I decided to change the pickup in my brand new distributor from rock auto as a last ditch effort. It worked.
Now I am dialing in the curve on my dizzy, and once that's done I'll dial in the carb. The dizzy is only advancing 14 degrees by 2800 rpms and I want about 25, so I'm going to pick up some Mr Gasket 925d springs today and give that a try.
Last I still need to figure out why I'm running about 210 degrees and losing antifreeze through the cap even though I've got a 180 stat. I'm beginning to suspect the water pump.
Oh yeah, and through it all I've changed the exhaust so that it's finally the way I want it, with a turbo muffler and a side exit tail pipe. Much more civil and I'm sure the neighbors appreciate it.
