71 "Real Deal" Project Page

Post by flyboy71 »

Just so everyone knows Im actually working on something, I finally decided to post an official project page because I officially started actually heading toward trying to make some serious headway on an actual project. Back in 2009 I picked up my first bump which seemed to be halfway decent. 3 spd, 240 I-6, fresh paint, new trim, bedliner, etc.

Image

After I got it home I realized it had some major rust issues and decided to strip it down. Needless to say the only thing worth considering keeping was the frame, engine and suspension. The body was pretty well shot all over and the bed was toast. That’s when I decided to mod the frame and add a ’03 Crown Vic front suspension and ’98 explorer rear and go custom. While I was doing all of that I started collecting the sheet metal I needed to rebuild.

About a year later one of our forum members “Drytoast” had an unfortunate accident that ended up totaling his bump. I acquired the truck and figured I could use most of the body from it to get what I needed for my project and scrap the rest. It had 50k miles on it and was in pretty decent shape overall despite the damage.

So this spring I decided to strip the orange 72 and declare the frame to be scrap. The more I dismantled the truck the more I found a heck of a lot of really good, like new parts on it and began to second guess which of the two projects I really wanted to tackle. What looked like a parts truck suddenly became more of the actual project. I was also getting too many comments from the Mrs asking when I was ever going to do something with all my stuff. So, I have decided to go somewhat stock on the resto and just make it mild and do most of the updates on the interior. This will give me something to finish and drive. The other chassis can be done once this one is finished. So, right now I finished the frame and as soon as I complete my sandblast cabinet the rest of the chassis will follow.

Yeah the more I tore into the truck the more I realized he had a pretty decent one here to start with. Ill pretty much use everything from it including the upper half of the cab. The front clip obviously wont be re-used though. I sent him a PM on here but not sure he checks it anymore.

Im about 90% finished with my homemade blast cabinet so hopefully I can start blasting the smaller stuff next week to get all the chassis components finshed and painted for assembly. One sheet of plywood and a few 2x3's. I had gloves from a former blast cabinet and used the tops from small drywall pails to hold them in place. All it needs is some sheet metal for a chute and a bucket siphon blaster.

I think you made the right decision there, Flyboy71! I look forward to seeing your project progress.
You sure are good with wood, too! Nice looking blasting cabinet you got started there. What compressor set-up do you have in your shop to drive it? (I'm in the hunt for one, myself.) :)

Cheers!

Thanks! My compressor is a 60 gallon vertical tank Campbell Hausfeld I picked up last year at Tractor Supply. I think Lowes carries them too but higher priced around here. For most things its decent but sandblasting it runs quite a bit.

The kids will be away all next week with my folks so I may have some evenings to make some progress on this.

The "Real Deal" sounds like a nice name for the truck! I like your cabinet, that is just cool.

Thanks, flyboy71! I was thinking along those lines...I just wanted confirmation on the size of compressor needed to power those blasters. :)

cheers!

So after waiting for some pneumonia to get outta my system I was back in the blast cabinet and cleaned and primed a few more parts. I have the axle housing and carrier yet and the rear suspension is done. Thanks to Zakt for the rear hangers. After this on to the front suspension. It feels so good cleaning everything up and seeing it in fresh primer.

A little off topic but is the color of this truck cordova or calypso coral? I'd think i'd be calypso coral because its a '72 and I dont think they had cordova anymore by then..

This color is rattle can orange as far as I know. The base color underneath is the "Durango Tan" offered on the 72 Explorer Special but it is yellow to me.
