starting a restore, new a lil help to get started
Hey guys, so a little background, it was my great grandfathers truck, and he bought it brand new. He gave it to his son (my dad) and well my dad just had it sitting out back since about 1990. So I got her about a year ago, and finally have some cash and time to spend. big plan is total frame up restore. and have her cherry for when my son gets to the age I can pass it to him. I would love to hand over the keys in a far better shape than what my dad gave her to me. But short term I just want to get her running and rolling, then go from there.
Now I'm still not 100% sure if shes a 67 or 68... maybe you guys could confirm this for me, I looked on the site at all the pics (which is amazing) but i see stuff from both years.
Few questions... (see pic) the ugly blue rack in the back... thats got to go... is that a factory option or after market? and anyone have experience taking this out? the pillars are inside the bed frame. looks difficult
Any incite on rust treating? there is some rust on her, but none of it looks horribly bad. I was looking into POR15, but is there some kind of solution you can spray on to help remove besides grinding and sanding my life away?
And also for all the guys that have a similar projects, any advise? what not to do and maybe what to does?
I'm new to the pre-80's autos. I was huge into the import scene in my younger years, worked at a shop and did anything from installing tail lights to installing custom turbo kits, but this old ford has me sratching my had on where to begin and what to do.

Do a search of pixresizer, it's on the site somewhere, simple resolution changer to make the pics 600x800.

Hey, welcome!! Sounds like a great project and I can't wait to see it kick off!
I use photobucket.com to host the pics and then you just copy and paste the IMG code from there to your post or reply, and boom! You don't have to resize them before you upload to photobucket, and others can click on your pics to enlarge them for better viewing too.
These trucks are a blast to work on, I started wrenching on mine when I was 15 (34 now). They're simple machines really, don't be intimidated. There's always tons of guys here eager to help with tips and advice.
You may want to check out Eastwood.com too, they have a lot of product for dealing with rust. I've used several for years and they really work.
Good luck on your project!

Oh - and spotting a '67 is super easy as several things were '67 only-
Hood emblems are different
No rear reflectors
Door panels are different
Heater controls are pull knobs.. etc.

Well, it's definitely a 1967! It's a Flareside too! Looks like a great foundation from which to start. Reminds me of my first Bump, a '67 SWB Flareside...man I miss that truck!

So 67 huh, the dash I think is why I thought it was a 68, I have my dad hunting down the title for me now. He's in New Mexico and I'm located in Washington. but does anyone have experience with one of those racks in the back? (big blue ugly thing)

Ok, now just scroll over your pictrure and the copy box will come up, click on the bottom one (with the 'img' code) It'll copy the picture.
Then on your post in fordification just right click and paste the image where you want it. This site will automaticly resize the photo if you don't take them in 600x480.

Re: starting a restore, new a lil help to get started
Depends on how it's attached to your truck's bed. If bolted, UNbolt it, if welded, grind off the welds while being careful to NOT grind any of the truck bed's sheet metal off in the process.cboogie23 wrote:does anyone have experience with one of those racks in the back? (big blue ugly thing)
A somewhat over simplified explanation, yes, but sorry, I can't tell by the pictures how it's attached, but I've seen racks bolted, welded or both.

That rack in the back... interesting, looks almost like a chase rack for off-road racing or other racing being that it has mounts for two spare tires. Just reminds me of an older version of a chase rack at the races
