The 5.0 Is Almost Ready
Been working on engine for about a week now, it used to be covered in a 1/4" film of oil haha. Not anymore. It came out of an 84 Colony Park, the Aod is already installed with the 5.8 and running and driving. However, I am looking for a little more fuel economy, so I am down grading to the 5.0 2bbl. New heads and intake are on, and re installed every gasket on the engine.

Looks good! Always nice to get some freshly painted iron under the hood. Did you replace the rear main and freeze plugs, too?
Re: The 5.0 Is Almost Ready
Freeze plugs were all perfect, the deep cup type which is the kind I like. The rear main no, just hoping it don't come back to bite me in the butt .
Re: The 5.0 Is Almost Ready
Done, all that's left is to install and swap out plug wires.

If its a one piece seal you could change it before putting on the flex plate Would suck if it leaked after you get the motor in.JMcTurnan wrote:Freeze plugs were all perfect, the deep cup type which is the kind I like. The rear main no, just hoping it don't come back to bite me in the butt .

Re: The 5.0 Is Almost Ready
Speaking of flexplates, make sure you use the flexplate that came with the 5.0 and not the one that's on your motor now. The flexplates changed balance in '82.
Re: The 5.0 Is Almost Ready
It's a 2 piece seal. Yea definitely on the fly wheel. This is the original engine that was paired with the AOD so the flexplate on it and spacer are natural to the engine. I had to get another flywheel for the 5.8 when I installed the engine.

I thought they had switched to a 1 piece seal by 84. Did you ever look at the casting numbers on the block?JMcTurnan wrote:It's a 2 piece seal. Yea definitely on the fly wheel. I believe that's correct, one-piece seal after 82.Fo-Mo-Co wrote:I thought they had switched to a 1 piece seal by 84. Okay I wouldn't know haha. Your probably right, I can't tell because I have never taken off the fly wheel or flex plate to look .

Re: The 5.0 Is Almost Ready
If it is a one piece, it's about a $15 seal and can be replaced in about 10 minutes. Not a lot of time or money for a little bit of insurance (compared to pulling the trans to fix the engine oil leak 10,000 miles after you put the motor in).
Re: The 5.0 Is Almost Ready
Is it one of those that look like a front main seal that you just take a screw driver, and pop it out and top another in? Sorry I have never worked on a ford engine past a 77.

Re: The 5.0 Is Almost Ready
It doesn't have a lip to get the screwdriver behind. If you're VERY VERY careful, you can drill a tiny hole in the seal, close to the block not close to the crank, and screw a small sheet metal screw into the hole, then use pliers or dykes to pull the seal out. You may have to drill two holes and use two screws (at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock). Be extremely careful not to nick the crank. You can use a small hammer and carefully tap the new seal into place, using the old seal backwards to strike against.JMcTurnan wrote:Is it one of those that look like a front main seal that you just take a screw driver, and pop it out and top another in?
