My 68/70 body swap

Post by towtruckerfour »

I spent Saturday tearing down the 4x4. That was fun. Stupid rusted bolts. By the end of the day the body was off. I will try to post a picture tonight of the frame. I now have a bed of body parts in my side yard.

Here is a picture of the 68 stripped down to the frame. I took it to work and pressure washed the frame. Next is replacing the flywheel.

Yeah, I found a torch was my best friend when taking the front clip apart...

There are vendors on eBay for the springs clips and OEM style bolts.

If you werent talking about a truck your neighbors would be worried

I used a ton of PBlaster on mine. I cut a lot of bolts off since its easier to buy new than save the ones that are on anyway. Grab a few cans of oven cleaner and a pressure washer and degrease away.

I got the tranny pulled so I can take care of the flywheel. It is so much easier doing this with no body on the truck.

I have also been coating the frame and suspension with undercoating for protection

Here is this weekends progress.
Image
I got the flywheel and clutch back on the 4x4.
Image
The front end and cab are off the 70. I might keep the 302 for and rebuild it someday.
Image
I need to clean up the cab while it is off the frame. I plan on using undercoating on the firewall and the underside. I was surprised that there was hardly any rust anywhere. :woohoo:
My gameplan is to use as much from the 70 as I can.

Today, I made some good progress on the truck
Image
I am using undercoating on the firewall and under the cab and bed for protection.
Image
The frame has a cab now. The tranny and driveline is all hooked back up. I need to take care of a couple spots on the floorboard and then I will use undercoat there too.

Looking good. Anything reusable from the 4x4? or is it mostly junk?

I have a use for the outer fenders but the inner fenders are good. The cab is decent except the rear crossmember is rusting out on the driver side. The bed has a rust hole on the passenger wheel well which is fixable. The tail gate is shot. What are you looking for?

Here is the latest progress on the truck. It has a bed and doors now. The cab is back together and the steering is finished. I might try to finish the front end this weekend.

Well. The front end is on and almost everything is hooked up. A few minor details and I should be able to start it.

I got the truck started today after fixing a few wire issues. The truck runs pretty good. It has no brakes but I test drove it anyways. I have two brake bleeders that are stripped so I can't open them. Looks like I'll be doing brake work tomorrow.

The truck is finally finished and drivable. I had to fix the reverse lights. I am very happy with how it turned out. I eventually want to put 33x12.50s on it when money allows. I am going back and forth on paint colors. I'm thinking either green or brown. Here are how it was before and now.
