72 f100 4x4 Headliner project step by step

Post by bigred72 »

Hey everyone, Heres how i did it. First off before i ever started, i searched this site and got some good ideas and came up with a game plan. One of those ideas was from In ford we trust and his FRP headliner. My truck didnt have a headliner in it, so i went to the salvage yard and picked up 2 to use as templates. one was a '67 the other was a '72.
1_1.jpg
I then went to home depot and purchased a 4x8 sheet of FRP and some 3m super 80 spray adhesive. i then picked up 2 yards of black marine grade vinyl from a fabric store. The headliners i got from the salvage yard werent flat so i traced them on cardboard first and made a template. i test fit the template in my cab and it fit good so i traced the the template to the smooth side of the FRP(dont forget to mark the center screw hole)

And started cutting..

i Didnt like how slow the cutting was going :D ..
4_1.jpg
once i got it all cut out i i sanded the edges with 220 grit sand paper and checked it against the original...
5_1.jpg
and did another test fit

notice there are 2 screws with washers holding up the front then i screwed the center screw(not sure if these are factory, but theyre very handy ) .

Im kinda ocd and not knowing how the vinyl would go on i made a small version first...

By the way i put the vinyl on the smooth side.

Now on to the real one...
7_1.jpg
laid out my vinyl and trimmed up the edges a bit...
8_1.jpg
i folded it in half and sprayed the vinyl and the FRP with 2 coats of adhesive and let it dry for 4-5 minutes(Instructions are on the can)..
13_1.jpg
I then folded it back down and started smoothing with my hand from the center out. Be careful with this step cause you get one shot... that glue is sticky

I repeated the last steps to the other side...
14_1.jpg
Now comes the tricky part, this took some thought( i hate that :D )what i did was glue and fold the straight parts first and cut and tweaked the corners and cut outs to work with the contours(if that makes sense) i was trying to avoid bunching of the material
15_1.jpg
and there you have it..the finished product...
16_1.jpg
since i already did 2 test fits i was confident it would go up fairly easy and it did :woohoo: Btw I did remove my rear view mirror and sun visors just so they werent in the way. I put up the trim, visors and mirror sat back and enjoyed the finished product. all in all it was more time consuming than difficult but i think preplanning and a lil ocd helps  .

Wow! Looks great. Thanks for the project thread! Now I know how to do mine. I was wondering how that would be done.

That looks great. I was trying to figure out what I was going to do. This is perfect.

That look sweet! You did an awesome job and all of your OCD paid off. I was going to do the exact same thing but in off-white vinyl but decided to stay with the stock look but your pics make me wonder if I should have gone your route! Thanks for the step by step and pics. :D
