Explorer Green 70 F-100

Post by fencepost0_1 »

Well hello this will be long build in that I never work on one thing very long  . I have a 72 Nova SS clone which is painted but needs everthing else. I have a 94 Z71 king cab which I have just completly replaced all the steering components. This truck here was my grandfathers he was the 2nd owner bought it maybe a year or 2 old. I have converted the it to power steering and power disc brakes and use to be my daily driver. I have a custom fabricated dash cluster but have not bought the gauges yet. Thought about a 4x4 conversion but I just can't make myself do it. Took some measurements today 17" from bottom of front fender well to center of wheel, 17" from bottom of bumper to ground, 31" from bottom of fender well to ground. Also sprayed some paint I had laying around, mixed it at a bodyshop I worked at a few years ago. I think It matches fairly well to the original explorer Green (PPG code 2256) called the parts store and all they sold was Dupont they could only mix it in Nason single stage this here is base clear. The motor has been rebuilt with a mild pulling Crane cam, bored 30 over, Edelbrock performer intake, Holley 650 with electric choke, Photronix dis conversion, B&M shift kit, new 4 flew radiator. Just needs the rear end rebuilt, it whines bad. Also has Flowmaster catback exhaust. A pretty good start. I plan on converting to a CV front and possibly Explorer rear. Running a 31" 10.50/ 15 on a 10" wheel right now but want to go to a 17" with somthing that equils 31" 10.50. Also want to add air and paint and it will be done. I have a gas tank from a K5 blazer that I think I will mount in the rear inder the bed, the sending unit should work with most after market gas gauges. Well that is the jist of it here are some pics.

Oh ya forgot about this one. this is the glove box 15 years and I still haven't cleaned the stuff my grandad stuffed in there. I'll probably put the radio in there. I'll post what I find when I do.

Can do will probably start by spot fixing some of the rust I have neglected to remedy 1st then on to the suspension, plus I have not found a donor yet. Did find an alturnative to having to add a secondary rail as 23boysdad did. Nothing wrong with the way he did it looks fine works great. Looking at his pics you can see the rack pretty good and I would like to have the ground clearance and let it be less visible. Yes I know if I run a 31" tire the distance from the rack to the ground will be the same as the I-beams to the ground now. I just like it tucked up under the truck better. I found a 3" lift for the panther front end, looks like the DONK guys aren't to found of how it's made as they don't offer as many lift options for it as the others? If the 3" lift works I can add a 2"-1 1/2" spacer under the rail and have it setting just where it is now. Spacer Kit 3" Lift 03-05 Crown Vic, Marquis, Towncar $195.00 http://universalcarlifts.com/product_in ... ucts_id=45

Also been studing the factory cross member and itss big and wide compared to the CV may try and add a bolt in cross member behind the CV unit to attach the to the a-arm brackets and the f100 rail won't know that until I get one to measure on. If all else fails I'll copy 23boysdad and bolt it in paint it all black and shag tail  .

Googled crown vic suspension and found some neat results people using Lexus cradles and aerostar cradles on different stuff may find a swap for my 72 Nova?

I vote that you leave the stuff in the glove box. :D
The word "jones" is a slang term meaning to crave, want, or desire; or, to feel withdrawal from an activity of passion. The general slang meaning is often associated with addictive substance habits but can be applied on a more universal scale.

Will I havn't posted anything on the progress because there hasn't been any. Work has slowed funds have dwindle but I'm caught up on my bills have a good family and that is a blessing. I did sketch how I think i'm going to do my CV conversion. The light blue plates will be welded in and should brace up the frame. The grey 2x3 pieces on the bottom of the rail are to raise the truck, I don't want mine lowered, the CV unit will bolt through the bottom of the factory rail and through the 2x3 into the cv unit. The cross member may or may not be added. I would like to add it and build my motor mounts off of it and it would add stability to the rails, but not sure there will be room for it. The holes in the top of the factory rails will be for the top of the CV unit.

Ok from one who is in the process the bolts going through the rails for the CV unit will not make it through an additional 3". You will need longer bolts. I measured my truck against a all stock and only came down 3". That is with low profile tires on 17" wheels. I would think if you ran something more along the lines of the wheels and tires from a stock CV your ride height without the additional 3" would be close to stock. I cut the original spacers and came up with about 1" or so above the rail. If you put that below the rail you would gain that inch. Now you can't just put the end down there as your suspension would be sitting on "stilts". You would have to fab some sort of pad for it to sit against.

Perhaps someone who has put the stock wheels on can give more insight as to ride height. I am trying to get mine down a bit. With new springs I should be roughly 11" from the ground to the bottom of the fenders right behind the tire. The unit I used came from a Police Interceptor. I do not know if a regular CV sits lower or higher that what I have.
