My 1971 F100

I bought this 1971 Ford F100 Custom Longbed one week ago. Drove it home over 400 kilometers of German Autobahn!

It has either a 302 or a 289 in it. Don´t know yet.

Now it´s at home in our barn.

It turned out to have more rust than expected, so I decided to take off the bed.

It´s all rusty in the most common places, the bed, the rear corners of the cab, hell even the backside of the cab, hood inside, floor...

I started sanding the frame today.

I want this to be my summer daily driver and I also want this truck to last a long time, so I´ll take care of all the rust problems. I´m not sure yet if I should take of the cab also...looks like a lot of work... :(

There is almost no rust in any of them pics, if you want to see rust come look at my 68 :lol:

Good evening Florian!

I agree with 1982 Flareside. Your truck looks quite clean to me, relative to the majority I've seen.

Also, I have yet to hear from anybody who pulled an old vehicle apart and said that there was less rust then they expected! I'm sure it happens but it's very rare. Rust isn't so easy to see when the metal's all covered up!

It looks like you have a really nice barn there to work on your truck in!

Yes, compared to other trucks it might have only minor rust, that´s because it´s an original Florida car and came to San Francisco somehow. But still, I want to get rid of all the rust issues for a while now..but I´m still not sure wether I should take off the cab or not? Is it much work to take it off? I need to remove to gas tank anyways because I need to weld the backside of the cab. So how much work is left for completely taking off the cab after you´ve already removed the gas tank?

Yeah, our barn is pretty cool. But it´s also pretty filled with my other projects and bicycles and of course my Dad´s 1999 Bluebird bus that we convert to a RV.

Yeah, it really sticks out of the mass of grey or black BMWs, Mercedes´, Audis and so on! People taking photos everytime... 8)

That's a pretty nice truck!
Taking the cab off is a lot of work, so I wouldn't do so unless absolutely necessary. If you decide to do so, since you have the bed off already, just put some boards across the frame, put some blankets or other padding material over that, then get two or three people to help you and roll the cab backwards so it's resting on its back on the frame rails. Then you can paint the underside of the cab.
Of course if you're going to pull the cab, you may as well remove it completely. then pull the engine and transmission, remove everything from the frame, clean it and paint, put all new brake hardware back on, rebuild the engine and transmission, and on and on and on! :lol:

Hahaha, that´s exactly what I´m afraid of, that my truck might get another wreck in our barn :lol:

I don´t know if it´s really necessary, I mean the floor panels are rusted pretty badly but otherwise it looks quite okay to me. I think I´ll take some photos tomorrow and post them here :wink:

You can replace the floor panels with the cab on the truck.

taking the cab off isn't that much work. it's unhooking and removing all the accessories that is the pain, but you look to be very organized, so i don't think you will have a problem.
here is my 66 f100 cab set on it's back for rust repair. i had never done this before and learned as i went along. if i can do it, anyone can. :D

But I think I found a pretty good solution for me, I´ll repair the floorboards now but leave the cab on. I´ll take the cab off and repair the rust over winter. That way it won´t take me that long now and I can drive it this summer. And I won´t get bored in the winter...I wouldn´t have gotten without anyways... :roll: :lol:
