Can I put a compressor in the basement?

I live in a rented house. It has no garage and the owner is not likely to build one. I want to get a compressor big enough to run an impact wrench, impact hammer, grinder, air ratchet and paint gun.
I know I am looking at a large compressor with a 60-70 gallon tank. I would not even consider a direct drive, would HAVE to be a belt drive. My question is: is it feasible and safe to install this in the basement and run a hard line outside?
Or am I doomed to forever man-handling an inadequate compressor up and down the basement stairs( )?

i don't know why you couldn't. most shops have them outside, and pipe them in. just drain it regularly. doh'.
where does the tank drainage get to go?

I see no reason why you couldn't mount yours in the basement. It's probably not going to make your significant other very happy, as it'll rattle the walls while it's running....and getting it DOWN to the basement could be interesting, depending on how you're set up. As long as you have the necessary electrical hookups, I'd say go for it.

Don't set it directly on the basement floor if it's concrete. Put something (i.e. small pieces of plywood or squares of thick rubber cut from a mudflap) under the feet. I found that if you don't the compressor makes a lot more noise because it will vibrate on the concrete.

Yea, getting it down there could be really difficult. Then you've got to figure out how to run your piping outside. I'm thinking you don't want an open window in Nebraska!

I put mine in my carport. It is very quiet and very efficient. I left mine on the wooden pallet and have had no problems out of it.

Perehaps you could build a outdoor closet for the compressor just a little wider with vent holes built in for it to breath.

Thats a good idea. I see those heavy plastic storage building a the Depot for less than 100 bucks. As long as theft is not much of an issue I would say go for it.

of course parking something right against the door might just prevent Theft. That or a big old gaurd dog.

I gut a good one....the guy, Bob Meduox who painted my truck had his compressor in the basment and he said it drove his ol' laddie up the walls, exspecially when he would forgett to unplug it before he went to bed

The one I have in my carport even if it comes on you can barely hear it in the house. The old lady wasn't real happy about me drilling a hole though the wall for the 220 power, but she got over it after the fact.
