Should I keep the stock flywheel for my 400HP FE?

Post by robroy »

Good morning,

I have a 400HP FE on the way from Proformanceunlimited, and I'm considering the possibility to swapping out the stock flywheel in my truck for something lighter.

Does this make sense?

The only other fast vehicle I've driven is my 1972 Datsun 240z, and it has a very light flywheel. It really adds to the high energy feeling of that setup.

But perhaps since FE's are larger, more torque oriented engines a light flywheel doesn't make sense.

Any opinions?

Thanks!

The less weight being thrown around the better. But 400 hp isn't super high for an FE so unless you're trying to squeeze every little ounce of horse power out of it then I wouldn't worry about it.

'Afternoon Mrtleavitt,

Thanks for the suggestion--I think you're probably right. I'm not interested in squeezing every last bit of horsepower out of it; I just want it to have the most enjoyable driving characteristics possible. (To be the most fun to drive).

I'll probably leave it as-is.

Thanks!

I run the stock heavy flywheel on my f.e. It will rev like crazy. It would be scary with a lightweight one. I think you,ll be okay with the heavy flywheel.

'Morning 427 and Convincor,

Thanks for the information. I read the link thoroughly and have a better understanding now about the differences between light and heavy flywheels. It sounds like the light flywheel may have been fun on my 240z but doesn't really apply to my F250. Can you imagine doing autocross in an F250?

Thanks folks,
