Confused

Post by 1970FordTK »

OK guys, I have a drivability problem. 70 model, rebuilt 360, remanufactured Tomcat two barrel carb(Autolite 2100 copy) which I had to rebuild due to leaky seals and new fuel pump. Ignition system is ACCEL dis. cap and rotor button with ACCEL copper core wire and bosh platuim plugs, with ACCEL coil. Timing is set 10 degrees + with vacuum line removed from dis. plugs are gapped .036 and points are .016 For six months starting, idling and moving it around the yard and test field no problems. C6 trans that was rebuilt 5 years ago. All new vacuum lines to the trans and motor. For some reason, it will knock off when slowing down but its not a constant problem. Truck restarts quick and easy after it does this. For every 5 times it may or may not knock off slowing down, it will knock off accelerating once. Again restarts quick and easy. I've put about 150 miles test driving it on the road, back roads, secondary highway and super slab. Normally I would keep trying to figure it out, but today it just got my goat really good. I though it might be water in the fuel, so took carb off and cleaned it out. No water in bowl, made no changes to any settings. It knocked off when I closed the hood not once but twice today along with the knocking off going down the road. I've checked for vacuum leaks twice today alone, double checked the timing. New starter (one reason I'm sure it starts back up so easy), new starter cellinoid, new 0 gauge battery wire and a new 2guage wire from celinoid to starter, and new battery. I'm beginning to believe its got gremlins that just want to make me mad. But being the good old truck it is, its never failed to restart and bring me back home. This aint my first trip around the block with points and a carb, but I'm dang sure starting to run out of things I can think of to check. I'm hopping someone here has been down this path and can tell me the short way out of the forest. If more info on the truck is need just ask and I will gladly answer the questions, I'm hopping to get this straitened out this weekend if possible. As always thanks in advance folks.

Yeah, I'm thinking bump the float up a bit and richen the idle half a turn and it should go away.

Slamed the hood and it quit ? I am kinda leaning toward electrical Check the primary connections at the coil, make sure your condenser is tight and has a good ground.

Checked the float, it was 3/8 to 7/16 off. So reset that, double checked my grounds, was able to turn one a 1/4 turn. Put 30 miles on it and so far its running like a top. Thanks guys, best online shop manual I've ever found. :fr:
