Cooling ?
My 67 has a 300 inline six. I had not run it in a while, because I went from 3 on the tree to a automatic C4. Got it back on the road yesterday. It was running hot at about 220 when I remember it used to run at about 180 or 190. I took out the thermostat and replaced with a new one that read 180 on it. Took it for a spin today and same problem it was reading about 200. Any idea what is going on?

re: Cooling ?
I might be talking like a idiot but did you hook up the cooling lines on the C-4? the radiator might be too small for the cooling of the engine and tranny!!just my
I'm no expert on these truck's trying to learn about them as I go!!

re: Cooling ?
Hey I learn as I go also. No worries. Actually I added a seperate cooler for the tranny. I think I am going to remove the thermostat all togther. Should run cooler then.

re: Cooling ?
I was taught this is one of the worse things anyone can do in an attempt to cool an engine.I think I am going to remove the thermostat all togther. Should run cooler then.
The coolant has to have a chance for the radiator to cool it down.
The thermostat restricts or slow it's flow to give the radiator a chance to do it's work.
Put a restrictor plate in but don't just pull the entire t-stat out.
I'd look real hard at the cooling fins for restriction or blockage of airflow first.
And then do a leak-down pressure test on the entire coolant system.
(Most Discount, O'Reileys, Advance or Pep Boys will do this for ya' for free.

re: Cooling ?
Thanks,
One thing I forgot to mention is the fan shroud is missing in my 67. I didnt mention it only cuz I never had one before and the cooling was never a problem. Anyways I took it for another spin today. I notice that when I am driving down the road it holds steady cool temp., but when I get home and leave it running is when it begins to heat up. Could the missing fan shroud make all the difference?

re: Cooling ?
Believe it or not, a bad radiator cap can cause overheating if the spring is worn out. If you have no leaks and low coolant is not the issue, then I would try flushing the system and adding new coolant (50/50 mix) and a new cap. Leave the new 180 deg. thermostat in place!

re: Cooling ?
The shroud would help, not sure how long it sat but maybe flush the radiator and get good mix of antifreeze and water.

re: Cooling ?
The inline 6 trucks never had a Fan shroud. The Fan is close enough to the radiator not to need it.
1968 F100 Took the running 390 out, and installed a Built 300 with AOD.
