"Uncle Darrell" Project Update Thread

Post by mjhaltom »

I have been a member of this forum for quite a while now and have been actively restoring "Uncle Darrell" since then. I just got a hang of the PICS, so I decided I would start an update thread.

First, some history:

Darrell Haltom was my great uncle. I never knew him. He was a vietnam vet that returned home in early 1971. After being in CA for a while for debriefing or whatever he climbed aboard a bus and started the long haul toward Hart County GA. On his way he stopped in Copperas Cove, TX and a White and light green two-toned Ford F100 caught his eye sitting up front on the lot of Cove Ford. He purchased it and drove it the rest of the way home.

Uncle Darrell died of a stroke in 1974. He had enjoyed good health up until then and his passing was very unexpected. He was in his thirties.

His beloved F100 was inherited by his brother (my grandfather) who drove it off and on until he sold it to my father in 1975 (two years before I was born) for $1500. Dad kept and used the truck for the next 30 years. I rescued it from the field at the family farm and Dad signed a bill of sale. He gave it to me because I told him I would love and care for it (It's a family heirloom!)

Here is a picture as I was starting to tear it down. This bed will be replaced with one from a 1967 F100. I want the smooth look, no emblems, marker lights, etc.

I am installing a 1968 (or 69) grille because I am eliminating all the shiny bits. I got this one on ebay from CA! Just hung it on the front to see what it will look like one day.

I plan on Wimbledon white everywhere, grille bumpers, all the sheetmetal, interior--I hope it looks like it fell in a bucket of paint when I am done.

Here is a before shot of the interior.

Here it is in its current state. No to dashpads! No to column shifters! Yes to T18 and Yes to 390!

Sorry for the length of this post. I just wanted to show you guys how much I have learned from this site and to show that I am actually working and not just typing. Let me know what you think. Take Care and God Bless.

I Spent this weekend stripping, painting and undercoating the underside of the cab and the remainder of the frame. Nasty, filthy work... Then I cut out holes and installed a cargo lamp I got on ebay. I also cut out a cab corner and will soon weld a patch panel in. PICS coming soon...

Went home for lunch today and worked for about 30 minutes on "Uncle Darrell". I also took some new photos to share.

Last week I cut a hole for the cargo lamp I bought on ebay, ran the wires and drilled the dash for the install of the switch. Not as hard as I thought it would be. A coat hanger works great to run the wire through the "A" post.

I test fitted the cargo lamp and it works great (even thought the hole is a bit uneven). It'll probably bug me till I smooth it out (even though it will never be seen).

I also spent some time cutting out the right rear cab corner and cutting down the patch panel I got from LMC to fit the opening. I will be welding it in soon.

Today at lunch I went home and layed out the pattern for the speakers I am going to install in the doors. They are 4X6s that will go along with the dual center speaker I got from LMC. I actually got on test installed after I used my die grinder to cut the hole. Here are the PICS!

I think it will work ou well. I am working hard to get the cab fabrication done so that it can go off to paint. When it gets back I will install tons of new goodies! Then the drivetrain will go in...stay tuned! I can't wait!

OK. Downloadable pics only from this point on. Sorry dial-up guys!

Well, I traded my 240 6 cylinder for a 390.--------Well that what I thought.

I went to clean up the engine today and noticed that the valve covers had mismatched "power by Ford" script on them. I immediately said OH S___! because I knew what had happened! I measeured the stroke and it was 3.5" The valve cover of course said 390.

I did some research after this happened today and it seems I am the third person to get duped on this motor but the first to realize it. It was sold to the first fellow and installed in a 1964 F100. A tree fell on that truck during a windstorm and he sold the truck to the guy I traded with. He pulled the motor but only paid attention to the valvecover and what the first guy told him. Anyway, look like I got a recently rebuilt, good running 360.

I figured this out as I tore this motor down to clean and paint it and install gaskets, oil and water pump, etc.

I just decided to leave the TC cover naked aluminum and paint the timing pointer. As you may be able to see the valve covers are mismatched.

Looks good man  Hey since you in georgia if you need a valve cover that would match up i have several either way you would like for them to be if your interested. Glad to see another georgia guy on here. I've got a 390 but i ain't worried about putting it in the truck my 360 does to good to bother.
